Unconscionable

He's really doing it (h/t TPM):
Gov. Rick Perry will announce today that he is blocking the state from accepting $550 million for expanded unemployment benefits as part of the federal stimulus package
I didn't think it was possible for the other side to act in ways that one could argue are actually worse than George W. Bush's record, but I think this really goes there.

If this half-man ever steps foot into our state with his presidential ambitions in tow, I hope we will emphatically remind him of this moment.

And if you're interested in an historical perspective on just how knuckle-draggingly immoral Perry's decision is, put it up against the Styles Bridges Anti-Stimulus Measuring Stick.

President? (4.00 / 2)
He won't even get elected Governor of Texas again!  Kay Bailey Hutchison (whom I would also never support, but at least she has a triple-digit IQ) will shred him like the Detroit Lions in next year's GOP primary.

Good. (0.00 / 0)
Actions like this should be political career enders.

What a moron (0.00 / 0)
Does he really want to change the platter on which he's serving up the governorship to Kay Bailey Hutchison from silver to gold?

His Political Guru (4.00 / 3)
His political guru was, maybe still is, David Carney, Sununu's little protege, who did Ted Stevens' campaign in '08.

Can he? (0.00 / 0)
I could have sworn I saw Rep. Clyburn on TV a few weeks ago talking about Gov. Sanford saying the same thing, but how it didn't matter because the stimulus package went straight to the legislature and bypassed the Governors.

Although I may be mistaken.

From the link, FWIW (0.00 / 0)
The Legislature still could move to change state law to draw down the money, but those changes would be subject to a Perry veto.

To be eligible for all the money, Texas must enact legislation that would change how the state's calculates a worker's eligibility and extend benefits to more workers, including those looking for part-time work.

There HAS to be a recourse for those unemployed Texans! (0.00 / 0)
I hope there is some measure of appeal that they can make officially to get this money.

If not, I hope that all of those 6.4% of Texans who are currently receiving unemployment compensation raise holy heck about this, as well as the many more who support their cause do as well.  Too many of them are just a pink slip away themselves.

See this chart about the rapidly rising unemployment figures from the Center for American Progress

Perry's got the Presidential itch (4.00 / 2)
It was pretty clear at the last Republican Governor's Association meeting that Perry has the got the itch. Someone in his retinue must have told him he "looks Presidential".  It's shocking what some will do when they get ambitious.

I wonder if he said to himself, "The hell with 25,000 people in my state who are in financial trouble and need help. I've got a campaign to get going." Not surprising, unfortunely, is his belief that his stand against the needy will help him in today's Republican Party.

Not that everyone is a die-hard liberal, (4.00 / 1)
but I don't think there's a majority anywhere who are so invested in conservative ideology that they would support their state rejecting federal money, for which it is eligible, that will be spent whether or not it is spent on them.

ironic, isn't it? (0.00 / 0)
They've never refused money for pork projects that benefitted only certain people - but give 'em money that will help the unemployed, and they decide that's bad - we're not going to take it?

I sure hope the unemployed are paying attention.

Molly Ivins used to call Rick Perry "Governor Good Hair" because she thought that was pretty much all he had going for him. If we ever, EVER elect a Texan president again, we're out of our heads.
