Hello Blue Hampshire! Yes We Did!

by: Dean Barker

Wed Nov 05, 2008 at 08:29:53 AM EST

Some preliminary numbers, via WMUR's AP feed. Note that these are not 100% reporting yet:
Barack Obama: 55%
John McCain: 44

Jeanne Shaheen: 52%
John E. Sununu: 45%

Carol Shea-Porter: 52%
Jeb Bradley: 45%

Paul Hodes: 57%
Jennifer Horn: 41%

John Lynch: 70%
Joe Kenney: 28%

Some other notables: Harold Janeway beat Andy Sanborn, which personally makes me very happy - Sanborn's mendacious, negative campaign was striking for a Senate candidate.  We also held on to the EC, as noted below.  Bud Martin's race in SD-3 is too close to call according to AP, though he is down 2% to Denley.  And longtime nat'l Republican fundraiser Bob Odell will continue to represent a district that is more blue than he (darn!). But except for that note, a really good night.

Can you believe how early they called it for Obama in our state?  Even Shaheen and Carol were called much earlier than I thought would be. Welcome to Blue Hampshire!

And with Chris Shays gone in CT-04, we now have precisely four major Republicans (and one very confused Joementum) left in all of New England: Jim Douglas (VT-Gov), Maine's two senators, and Judd.  Time to start a retirement watch for Powerball Gregg.

Feel free to use this as a victory thread, and to take note of local races you want to highlight or people you want to thank.

Betsi DeVries (4.00 / 1)
I am so proud and happy that my state senator won a sound re-election victory.

As an alderman, Betsi took a very principled stand in voting against putting the so-called tax cap petition on yesterday's ballot. The people at that phoney 501(c)(4) NHAC ran a very negative campaign against Betsi, trying to use her vote to paint her as a "tax and spend liberal". It didn't work.

By the way, her opponent, Doug Kruse, has the support of Chuck McGee, making it doubly sweet.

Also, speaking of NHAC, the last time I checked, the two people running NHAC, Mike Biundo and Tammy Simmons, were losing their races for the NH house.  How about them apples?

Last, but not least, I am so pleased at the overall results in Manchester. In the boiler room yesterday, when we saw that the turnout in Manchester was higher than the models that the numbers crunches had expected, people were asking was this a good thing or a bad thing. We can safely say today - it was a good thing!

Energy and persistence conquer all things.

Chris Shays (0.00 / 0)
I knew you'd love that, Dean, I got the results on that one during the party last night but couldn't find you.

Come on, Al (4.00 / 1)
538 says Franken has pulled ahead, but it's far from over.

AP "uncalls" it (0.00 / 0)
There will be a recount in Minnesota.

Yesterday was clearly good news (4.00 / 1)
for John McCain.

Just being snarky. (4.00 / 3)
That was the running joke about news coverage throughout the campaign. Any development would be described as "good news for John McCain" by the pundits. A long primary contest for the Democrats? GNFJM. Obama opts out of public financing? GNFJM. The Biden pick? GNFJM. Hostilities in Georgia? GNFJM.

Yesterday was a challenge, but just you wait. We'll see pundit analysis that assuming the Presidency in 2009 is doomed to failure, and the Republicans sure were lucky to lose. The truly gifted pundits will somehow discover that this defeat strengthens their coalition somehow.

OK (4.00 / 2)
I figured it was something like that, but my snark detector is a little slow today.

Rachel Maddow -- yes, Rachel Maddow -- offered up some "better than expected" wisdom last night.

Then about 10 minutes later she ripped DeLay a new one, so I forgave her. Really, I appreciate her (and Matthews) calling DeLay out, but WHY have DeLay on in the first place? G. Gordon Liddy was booked?

[ Parent ]
John McCain really likes "do-overs" (0.00 / 0)
Since he expects to live as long as his mom, he can plan on another one.

I suspect that if Republicans thought they'd teach him a lesson about real loss, they've probably got another think coming.  McCain also likes being a spoiler.

Sanborn's Last Moment Attack on Janeway was dispicable. (0.00 / 0)
On Monday morning I started noticing these red "STOP JANEWAY's INCOME TAX" signs appearing around Loudon. My first thought was "where the hell do they get that from?". I had to stop and inspect them closer. It just burns me that these tyrants can pull this out at the last moment to scare voters to Sanborn on something totally unfounded!

I have been working hard for months now to make sure all my democratic signs were up properly and taken care of. Then these bozos have the gall to drop these bombs into what was a solid campaign. I thought Sanborn's huge signs were a bit over the top for our little burg in the first place. Thankfully, not many people got suckered into that windbag!

I heard Judd Gregg on NHPR (4.00 / 1)
Saying that he WILL run for re-election in 2010.

The 'Ticker's reporting it too. (4.00 / 3)
I don't blame him - as you have pointed out, he's never known a really challenging contest, so he doesn't know what he's in for.

He'll know one this time. (0.00 / 0)
Not that it's time to start campaigning, but I wonder if Governor Lynch will seek a fourth term--that factor could change the landscape of who runs for what.

[ Parent ]
Has there been a four-term Gov? (0.00 / 0)
I can't think of one.

I guess Meshech Weare was President of New Hampshire for a long time, but under our war constitution.

[ Parent ]
There hasn't been a Governor under the current system who served four terms. (0.00 / 0)
But there's no term limit either, and the fact that there hasn't been a four-term Governor before probably wouldn't be a big issue because most people have probably never thought about it.

[ Parent ]
Oh, I'm not saying it can't happen (0.00 / 0)
It would be rather exciting for John Lynch to be the first fourth term governor.

I like that our system is designed to ensure regular accountability by frequent elections and reward competence by not imposing term limits.

Lynch could be the most influential Governor in New Hampshire's modern political history. I think, medium-term, because of retirements and appointments, Lynch is already making a lasting impact on the course of our state's future. There are areas where I've been disappointed with him in the past, but I kind of hope he would seek a fourth year term (that is, of course, barring any major blunders over the next two years), because overall he's done a pretty decent job.

[ Parent ]
Err (0.00 / 0)
fourth two-year term...

[ Parent ]
At the moment I'm more thinking in terms of who will run for what in 2010 (4.00 / 2)
Lynch is a good administrator, despite the fact that many of us lament his unwillingness to make more dramatic policy shifts.  I'm not an income tax proponent, but particularly in the wake of Prop 8 in California, I'm frustrated that, despite the people of New Hampshire's openness to it, full marriage equality is less likely to come to our state because he doesn't want it, and much like the Fontas/Edwards decriminalization bill, the Senate seems likely to protect him from having to sign or veto any such thing.

[ Parent ]
And the Massachusetts referendum (4.00 / 1)
decriminalizing possession of small amounts of marijuana won with a huge margin, even winning in town where McCain beat Obama.

I'm tired of chickenshit politicians who are years behind their constituents. That isn't aimed specifically at Lynch.

[ Parent ]
Whoa....man. That's heavy. (0.00 / 0)
I got the munchies. Ya got any chips?

it is political will.

It won almost everywhere (4.00 / 1)
It was shocking result, in how overwhelming it was. I voted for it, but I'll admit some reluctance. I'm a bit nervous about legalization. Philosophically I accept it, but emotionally, I worry about it.

[ Parent ]
Yes, there has (4.00 / 1)
John Langdon. Eight years as Governor.

[ Parent ]
Kind of interesting (4.00 / 1)
that Langdon was Governor basically every other year. It still would be remarkable after the controversial change from annual to biannual elections. And there's still the consecutive fourth term claim to be made.

[ Parent ]
Well, the biennial election (4.00 / 1)
came in 1877, I believe.

So Josiah Bartlett seems to have won four consecutive terms.

[ Parent ]
He had a tough race the first time out (0.00 / 0)
against John Rauh. But the two re-elect contests have not been.
