Palin on Bridge to Nowhere: Take the Money And Run!

by: Mike Caulfield

Fri Aug 29, 2008 at 20:41:47 PM EDT

Today:

Palin also shares McCain's opposition to earmarks, opposing the infamous "Bridge to Nowhere," a pet project of two titans of Alaska politics, Rep. Don Young and Sen. Ted Stevens.

"I told Congress, 'Thanks, but no thanks' on that Bridge to nowhere," said Palin, who describes herself as a foe of the "good-old-boy network."

Um, not quite. As noted here, Palin supported the project until well after the initial money was siphoned off.

What's worse than taking $200 million  for a bridge to nowhere? How about taking the $200 million and not even building the freaking bridges?

The Republican-controlled Congress still gave Alaska the $452 million it had requested for the two bridges, merely removing the earmark directing where the state should spend the money. Gov. Frank H. Murkowski (R), who was once Stevens's junior colleague in the Senate, intends to spend that money on the bridges.

And after they got the money? Out of the highway bill and into Alaska's treasury?

Oh... bridges? We said we needed it for *bridges*?

"We will continue to look for options for Ketchikan to allow better access to the island," Gov. Sarah Palin said. "The concentration is not going to be on a $400 million bridge."

In other words -- we got the money. We're good.

Wow. Is there room for an addendum in Profiles in Courage?

But hey, I'm sure siphoning off that money to Alaska didn't hurt anybody, right?

Just last month, presidential candidate Sen. John McCain, R-Arizona, said pet projects could have played a role in a Minnesota bridge collapse that killed 13 people earlier this year.

"Maybe if we had done it right, maybe some of that money would have gone to inspect those bridges and other bridges around the country," McCain told a group of people in a town-hall style meeting in Ankeny, Iowa.

"Maybe the 200,000 people who cross that bridge every day would have been safer than spending $233 million of your tax dollars on a bridge in Alaska to an island with 50 people on it."

Knowledge vs. Experience (4.00 / 5)
So far, the wrong issue is being discussed.  What is her knowledge of the issues?  I have read she is a moose-burger eating, pro-life, creation believing, beauty queen- but it is simply amazing that there has been no discussion of her positions of national importance.

She was the most highly qualified to be a heartbeat away from the presidency?  This reminds me of Clarence Thomas- who Bush at the time also called the most highly qualified to be a justice.

Let's talk about what she knows-I eagerly await that discussion.

Issues vs. Loyalty Test (0.00 / 0)
WIll come with time -- we can't know that. That's the question to ask, but not what we can discuss yet.

What is emerging though is very disturbing picture, for instance with the "loyalty test" she imposed as mayor:

The newly elected mayor of Wasilla has asked all of the city's top managers to resign in order to test their loyalty to her administration.

Mayor Sarah Palin sent the resignation requests Thursday to Police Chief Irl Stambaugh, public works director Jack Felton, finance director Duane Dvorak and Mary Ellen Emmons, the head of libraries. A fifth director -- John Cooper, who oversaw the city museum -- resigned earlier this month after Palin eliminated his position.

Palin also asked each director to provide an updated resume and a letter stating his or her intentions. As of Friday, one director, whom Palin would not identify, had responded.

Palin said she made the request for resignations to find out who supports her as mayor.

''Wasilla is moving forward in a positive direction,'' she said. ''This is the time for the department heads to let me know if they plan to move forward or if it's time for a change.''

The difference is that Thomas advances one agenda item at a time (0.00 / 0)
If McCain's heart stops while President, every item on the Far Right's agenda will become the Presidential agenda. Palin will have no mandate but look what Bush has done without one.

Look what she has done in Alaska. The State of Alaska has wanted to build a gas pipeline for 20+ years. In March 2007 Palin presented the Alaska Gas Inducement Plan to the Legislature. Only one company, Transcanada Corp could meet the mandates set forth in the Inducement Plan. In 17 months she delivered a contract to build a $26 billion dollar gas pipeline into the hands of the weakest applicant.  She's done for Transcanada what Dick Cheney did for Halliburton.

She beat Gov. Frank Murkowski. After being supported by Senator Stevens in her '06 run, she called on him to "come clean" in '08. She backed her Lieut. Governor Sean Parnell to run against lone Congressman Don Young. I'd say she was attempting to be the "the last beauty queen standing" atop the Alaskan Republican Party.

She's either a very quick study and fearlessly bold or she has advisers and backers guiding her steps and bolstering her confidence. Unlike the President she may be an apt student. Palin may not be McCain's choice but the choice of the people that back McCain.

Maybe she'll be another voice (0.00 / 0)
blaming those pesky Soviets for everything...

What a phony: (4.00 / 1)
Palin:

And you know I think Senator McCain is on the right track with the earmark reform that he is so adamant about. I'm right there with him. We for instance here in Alaska, our administration, we cancelled that Bridge to Nowhere. You know, we know that that earmark was not in Alaska's, it wasn't in the nation's best interest. So we're going to be a part of that reform also.

An observation (0.00 / 0)
?"?The more you read and observe about politics,? ?the more you've got to admit that each party is worse than the other.?" - Will Rogers

I'd actually say it's the opposite (4.00 / 1)
It's people that know jack who think it's "all the same".

The minute someone pulls out that phrase, you know they have either been doing nothing but watching TV News, or they are selling you the cynicism that fuels the Republican party.

Not sure which of those you are...

Nice to meet you Mike. (0.00 / 0)
I consider myself one who analyses things from a historical perspective.
And Will Rogers isn't exactly a contemporary person, either.

Will Rogers was also the one who said:
"I bet you if I had met him and had a chat with him, I would have found him a very interesting and human fellow, for I never yet met a man that I didn't like."

Anyways, nice to meet you, Mike Caulfield. I apologize if you see my above comment as spam, but I will never apologize for expressing my opinion. (I will however take note and explain myself better.) I hope we can mutually express our opinions here comfortably & understandably.
-Steven

I've been surprised before. (4.00 / 1)
It was an odd quote to introduce yourself to a progressive site though. People are here because they think there is a difference, by and large.

No one here is interested in arguing that premise. It's that media tail-chasing that we are here to escape.

Sarah from an interview with Kudlow a month ago... (0.00 / 0)
"But as for that VP talk all the time, I'll tell you, I still can't answer that question until somebody answers for me what is it exactly that the VP does everyday? I'm used to being very productive and working real hard in an administration. We want to make sure that that VP slot would be a fruitful type of position, especially for Alaskans and for the things that we're trying to accomplish up here for the rest of the U.S., before I can even start addressing that question."
