Hoefer for Obama

by: Mike Hoefer

Thu Dec 20, 2007 at 09:05:25 AM EST

(The "other Mike" has been with us from the beginning (user #21), and has consistently brought class and depth to the writing here, so even though I'm bummed he didn't choose my man Dodd, I'm going to front page this (with apologies for putting part of it below the fold). - promoted by Dean Barker)

I have decided to vote for Barack Obama on January 8th. It has not been a simple decision for me as anyone who has read my navel gazing diaries on BlueHampshire over the past few months can attest to.

I was close to choosing Dennis Kucinich. He truly represents change and I feel single payer is the true meaning of "Universal" and the best answer to our health care woes. Perhaps as I get older and wiser I will be more comfortable for voting for such a long shot. Right now my ego is still stuck on winning.

I was close to choosing John Edwards. His passion is inspirational to me. Most of the hard core Dean supporters I worked with in 2004 have gone for Edwards and that gave me a lot to think about. I appreciate the amount of work he has done since 2004 advocating for the poor. I will gladly join the NH Edwardians to help John get elected should he come out on top of this crazy ride.

Friends and colleagues are valued Hillary Clinton endorsers and among her best advocates in the state. Their support and belief in Hillary had me thinking long and hard about my decision. I can't quite explain it, but in the end I've decided she's not my Primary "Brand".

Mike Hoefer :: Hoefer for Obama

On some levels my choice for Obama has been there all along. Looking back on some of my Howard Dean writing I found this:

Aside from a run for student council in the eighth grade, I have never been involved in politics but that all changed after hearing the "What I want to know" speech Howard made nearly a year ago. Those of us under “a certain age" had never heard oratory so powerful, it literally moved me to tears.

As most folks know by now Obama has "The Voice". Like many others I remember watching The DNC Speech on television 4 years ago. I tuned in to hear Howard Dean and was blown away by this guy Barack Obama. I was recording it, and remember replaying it for my wife and saying "This guy will be President some day." I just did not realize it could happen so soon.

A couple of his lines near the beginning of his speech struck me hard:

In a tolerant America your name is no barrier to success.

In a generous America you do not have to be rich to achieve your potential.

Those two lines neatly sum up 80% of a domestic agenda. Here was someone of my generation speaking like one of The Greats, he was speaking of the promise of America and imploring us to live up to that dream. Had I been listening to my heart, the choice would have manifested itself much earlier.

Here are a couple of other things that have influenced my decision:

  • Talking 'bout my generation: It may be ageism, but the fact that Barack is of my generation, just 7 years my senior, is appealing. Like me he has young children, what a refreshing perspective that will be in the White House. It has been too long since elementary aged kids have roamed the halls of the People's House. His Presidency will be a wonderful fresh start for the next generation of America's history.
  • Scary Smart: The people he has surrounded himself with and is getting advice from are impressive and shows his confidence with himself and the things he values. These folks are what I call “Scary Smart” (a positive term.) if there is any cosmic justice in the universe they will all have important parts or input in an Obama Administration (maybe even a Supreme Court nomination):
    • Robert Reich: "If there’s anyone in the race whose history shows unique courage and character, it's Barack Obama".
    • Laurence Tribe- Obama... has given him the most sense of "hope and possibility" from a candidate since he supported John F. Kennedy '40 in 1960.
    • Laurence Lessig: After the debacle that is the last 7 years, the duty is upon the Democrats to be something different. I've been wildly critical of their sameness… I would give my left arm to be able to celebrate their difference. This man, Mr. Obama, would be that difference. He has as much support as I can give.
  • Other Endorsements: Certainly not a driving factor for me, but a fine group of NH folks to be associated with:
  • Technology Plan: Obama's Technology plan is impressive and shows he understands the power of good technology in Government. He "gets it" because the plan is not just technology (routers, wireless spectrum and like) but about communication and making government more open and transparent. If they can find the right CTO, and it will not be easy, it could really "flip the funnel" on information regarding how Government is run. Sunlight is the best disinfectant they say.
  • Intangibles: I sort of mentioned this above, but one of the things I have come to realize and hope others do as well, is that there is no right answer for everyone, just a right answer for you. If this were scientific we could take a bunch of measurements, define multivariate position rubrics and scientifically choose the best candidate. Although it might be easier, fortunately it does not work that way. People decide based on the innate qualities that appeal to them and they feel best serve the country at the given time. For me Obama has the right attributes for this time in our history.

Based upon the fact the the NH Primary is only a couple of weeks away and that recent events have created a nearly palpable change in momentum here in NH, I understand my endorsement is no “Profile in Courage". None the less I wanted to diary my decision and share it with you. Best of luck in making the decision that is right for you!

You echo my thoughts (0.00 / 0)
We all come at this from different angles, but it's amazing how well you echoed my thoughts. If there are two parts that resonate most strongly with me, they are
  1. The quality of people supporting and working with Senator Obama (Robert Reich, Samantha Powers, Betsy Myers, Harris Wofford, and so on)
  2. The intangible qualities of leadership, statesmanship, and ability to bridge divides.

In a race where there truly are so many strong candidates, I find that it's those intangibles that swing many of the folks I know who support Obama. That's why I try to get everybody I know to meet the man or at least see him in person. The result is the consistently positive, hopeful, determined, inspired attitude you see in so many supporters, and I'm thrilled to welcome you to our ranks.

Welcome Mike... (4.00 / 1)
You have summed up in this diary what so many of us try on a daily basis to put in to words.  For me, there have been twists and turns in this campaign; certainly things I do not agree wholeheartedly with Obama on; but he has never claimed to be a perfect person or a perfect candidate.  He recognizes his fallibility and his humility is humbling to me...  I feel it in my bones when I hear him speak.  He is the one... While other candidates have great things to offer, and would do a good "job" at being president, Obama will be a great president.  His presidency will change America for the better.

I did have some concerns regarding religion. but, I came across a video clip the other night that made me feel better. He was mentioning even if we were just a Christian nation, which brand would we choose?

I'd gave me confidence that he will approach faith as a private matter and our future is that of "coexist" mentality.

I too, am not all that comfortable with religion as part of the political process, but am comfortable with a person of faith as part of the political process.  Especially when this particular person of faith, really appears to "get it."

He states:

... Over the long haul, I think we make a mistake when we fail to acknowledge the power of faith in the lives of the American people, and so avoid joining a serious debate about how to reconcile faith with our modern , pluralistic democracy.

Our failure as progressives to tap into the moral underpinnings of the nation is not just rhetorical, though.  Our fear of getting "preachy" may also lead us to discount the role that values and culture play in addressing some of our most urgent social problems.

After all, the problems of poverty and racism, the uninsured and the unemployed, are not simply technical problems in serach of the perfect ten-point plan. ...

right time (4.00 / 4)
Your comment that you knew Obama would be president one day but not this soon reminded me of a comment made by George Will (not I guy I like very much) when Obama was still deciding whether or not to run.

He said, "If the girl is standing on her toes, kiss her!"

It made me laugh and made me think. Let's not be too inflexible when deciding if the time is right. After all what have we been hearing?

"The time is now."

Congrats (4.00 / 4)
Congrats, Mike, on making a decision.  Now, get out there and try to make it happen in the time that is left!

I look forward to working with you on getting a Democrat elected President next November.

Bravo Mike (4.00 / 1)
Very well put together and argued.

Like the Globe, I have been reading Barack's books, and I agree with them that it is almost impossible to read his books and not want to vote for him. However, unlike the Globe, I think that's thin grounds for an endorsement, and you make the case much better.

I particularly like that you didn't slam the other candidates, all of which have merit, and all of which I would support in the general election, but if the primary were held today (and if I were registered in New Hampshire), I would vote for Barack Obama.

All do have great merits (0.00 / 0)
I have only been paying attention for a couple of cycles but I think this will go down as our strongest field for some time.

Welcome Aboard the Big O in 08! (0.00 / 0)
I also saw a president at the podium 4 years ago, and have followed Obama through his Illinois House and U.S. Senate seat.
Being the political junky that i am and having family in Illinois, I wondered why the Republicans would bring in a constitutionalist like Alan Keyes to run against Obama.

The republicans are afraid, very afraid of Barack Obama and what he can do.
He has that RFK vision, and enthusiasm.
He is Respectable, something Washington has not seen in years.
Welcome aboard!

If we don't do it who will?
Teach a mind, change a nation!

Obama has more experience than Edward sna dhillary what are you talking about....people need to read more maybe your the one that had to much dope...

Choosing Obama (4.00 / 1)
I am 56 years old and have never felt the winds of change any stronger than I do now.  Even the heady days of protest in the late 60's/ early 70's did not compare to the excitment and energy surrounding Barack Obama's presidential campaign.  Anyone who has seen him in person can testify to this.

"There's somethin' happening here. . .  What it is ain't exactly clear. . ."

It is like water for those who have been in the desert.

It is truth.
It is integrity.
It is intelligence.
It is hope, faith, and charity.
It is listening and understanding.
It is kind.
It is a dream for a better future.

We have not seen a politician, since I became politically aware in high school, who has offered what Barack Obama promises.  He will make an outstanding President of the United States.

"I don't want to be President of the Red States or the Blue States.  I want to be President of the United States."  Barack Obama

I sent some friends an email regarding my decision (0.00 / 0)
A couple of quotes from thier replies
If he [Obama] were president  I would no longer cringe when someone said to one of my kids "you could grow up to be the president."

and
There is still a long way to go, but I am honored to know that people in NH are taking their role so seriously.
