Fred Tausch Not Running for Anything

by: Dean Barker

Wed Jul 22, 2009 at 09:16:10 AM EDT

Pindell's got the scoop:
STEWARD of Prosperity founder Fred Tausch, of Merrimack, issued the following statement today regarding his plans for the 2010 elections:

..."Many Republicans have encouraged me to be their voice as a candidate for office next year. It was an honor to be approached and I gave the prospect serious consideration. But after careful deliberation, I've decided not to enter public service at this time.

What a colossal waste of money.

And here I was this morning wondering whether the move to Merrimack was a way to slip into the NH-01 race in lieu of senate.

Adding: Tausch's not-so-subtle attack on Ayotte was released last week, and the Lauren Dorgan article exploring his Goldman Sachs, Gravel-supporting past was on Sunday.  The decision must have been a very recent one.

The real question is... (4.00 / 1)
does he continue to pony up 400 large every quarter promoting his vision for stewarding the nation's economic health?

- if he does, it means he is sincere, if naive.

- if he doesn't, I would interpret it to mean the whole STEWARD thing has been a vehicle for getting Fred better known. He wanted to run but now realizes his background won't stand scrutiny.

RE:I've got a better idea for Fred! (4.00 / 6)
He should split the difference with me and give me 200k and I'll pay off my mortgage! What a way to waste money 400k for those crappy ads.

I Found His Ad To Be Weak... (4.00 / 2)
...weak on message, and the way he portrayed himself.  Obviously he did some voice training, and he probably did some speech coaching, and it all made him look phony and insincere.

The "S.T.E.W.A.R.D." thing was such a reach, too.  I wonder what consultant dreamed that up.

It's good to know that even in the Republican Party, having millions to buy an office, and half a million to promote a name, has only so much clout.

I think he probably moved to New Hampshire thinking that this is a state he could own.  Thing is, we've seen the best of ads and candidacies through the years with our First-In-The-Nation Presidential Primary breeding ground environment, so we're not fooled easily.  You have to have substance and depth to be taken seriously.

The plan seemed to be working at first, didn't it? (4.00 / 2)
The guy got some political street cred just for the promise to spend $100K on his website. Then his willingness to dump an additional $400K or so on ads getting himself known this early in the cycle must have raised some eyebrows.

I think the combination of the ex-AG getting into the race with the backing of the GOP establishment and Dornin's exposure of some if his not-so-savory background made him rethink the plan.

An unmade man with an outsized plan. (4.00 / 2)
And the morning-after horse's head in his bed after a friendly chat with Gregg and/or Papa Sununu might've given him a nudge.

(And, unless Chris Dornin did some relevant reporting that I haven't seen, I assume you meant Dorgan, not Dornin.)

Aren't you surprised, though, (0.00 / 0)
that the door wasn't left open for Plan B in the NH-01 race, given Guinta's travails?

I got nothing.

how long... (4.00 / 1)

How long does it take for Mike Dennehy to start working for Kelly, now that he has successfully (a) ginned up a couple hundred thou of attacks against Hodes from someone who doesn't know better, and then helped convince Tausch to get out of her way. Clever!
