Dir. Donahue Legalizes Medical Marijuana all by Herself

If you listen early and hard, you can hear the sounds of a Director of Politics making stuff up:
If you listen early and hard, you can hear what a party wants. In New Hampshire, Republicans are looking at an opportunity they haven't seen in a long time. A wide open Senate seat as Sen. Gregg exits, an open house seat as Rep. Paul Hodes runs for Gregg's seat, and a seat Republicans feel they can pick up in Rep. Carol Shea-Porter's district.

Add to that the recent passage of gay marriage in New Hampshire, legalization of medical marijuana, and economic pain that is only getting worse as companies let go of hundreds of workers at at time, and you have Republicans seeing red.

But I digress. The point of Director Donahue's latest GOP-handicap piece is to tell the world about Mittens' super secret underground campaign, using the anecdotal evidence of one person:
In discussions with Republican men and women, something has replaced the head shaking of a few weeks ago. The have a reply now. And it has nothing to do with Sarah Palin saying if she runs she can beat Obama. It has nothing to do with her at all.

The word is this: Mitt. Tried and true in 2008, getting comfy like the baseball "mitt."

He's running a quiet campaign, the underground kind the national press is not supposed to notice, but reminding voters he is in the hunt. Romney is living largely out of Wolfeboro, New Hampshire.

Nothing to do with Sarah Barracuda at all?  I'm crushed.  It was such a short time ago, after all, that Donahue was trumpeting her as the "underground" candidate...
Palin gives teeth to being pro-life, having a Downs syndrome child. This is a possibility every woman thinks about when she is pregnant. Palin has a six month old. AND she is a hunter.

Either Central Casting and Candid Camera have teamed up to trick cable television, or this is the best real choice and the best hidden secret the republicans have made in decades.

...She gives voice to young people and women of all ages.

Mitt's Money Buying NHGOP? (4.00 / 4)
Mitt's PAC, Free (Money) and Strong America, spent over $40,000 to help Jeb Bradley in the special election, and also gave $10,000 to the NHGOP in the same period. So, yes, of course Mitt is being viewed favorably by the people associated with the NH Republican Party - he has, one might say, paid for that affection.

"When you get to the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on."  Franklin D. Roosevelt

What's with the (0.00 / 0)
Republican spin machine over at St. A's? When Dante Scala was there, I don't remember it being partisan like this. He actually had something to say.

Did Judd Gregg decide to make the Institute a pr arm of the GOP after their defeat in '06?

Don't Mind Republican Commentators (4.00 / 1)
. . . but, at the very least, this role should be filled with someone who (a) does his/her homework, (b) knows something -- anything! -- about politics, (c) knows how to write, and (d) provides real, substantiated, and well-defended insights above and beyond what pops into his/her head 30 minutes before a column is due to be published.

Donahue is no Mike Murphy, that's for damn sure.

An opportunity they havent seen in a long time? You mean having no incumbents at all? (4.00 / 8)

Thank God they were able to remove  Sununu, Gregg, Bass and Bradley from Congress they could get this opportunity to seek seats without the advantages of incumbency in any race.

Hopefully they will get this opportunity every two years.

"But, in the unlikely story that is America, there has never been anything false about hope." Si se puede. Yes we can.

The beauty of a Donahue (4.00 / 1)
column is its richness (of questionable statements).

I pondered whether to go after that, but then the post would've been even longer, and as it is it's long.

[ Parent ]
What, you have something against length? (0.00 / 0)
Guess that explains a lot. :)

Interesting point... (4.00 / 2)
This is the first election since partisan elections began in NH that NOT ONE Republican nominee for major office will be an incumbent...I like the trend!

Democrats solve problems, Republicans sit and say no.

The GOP is in the catbird seat. (4.00 / 2)
They know for an absolute fact that they won't lose more than one federal seat.

And they won't lose a single federal incumbent.

And the 2010 governor's race is almost certain to give them the best result they've had since 2004.

As Chairman Mao -- apparently the new patron saint of the NHGOP -- said, "There is chaos under heaven, and the situation is excellent."

Echoes of Python (4.00 / 5)
Reminds me of the dead parrot sketch: "The NHGOP's not dead -- it's sleepin! If it wasn't nailed to the perch, it would have muscled up to those bars and VOOM!"

Remarkable party, innit? Beautiful plumage!
