NH Young Dems 2013 Executive Board Announced

Thursday evening, the New Hampshire Young Democrats held executive board elections at the New Hampshire Institute of Politics at Saint Anselm College. More than 30 young democrats turned out to support and elect progressive candidates to lead the NHYD.

Brief introductions were given by former NHYD secretary Kristin Zanotti, and former VP of Public Affairs Theo Groh. Candidates running for the executive board were given a chance to speak about their reasons for running. Many expressed their interest in the 2014 mid-term elections, and ensuring Senator Jeanne Shaheen, Congresswoman Ann McLane Kuster and Carol Shea Porter, as well as Governor Maggie Hassan and all local officials are re-elected to help innovate and move New Hampshire forward.

After unanimous votes for all candidates, the new executive board for the New Hampshire Young Democrats is as followed; President: Theo Groh; Vice President of Political Affairs: John Greene; Vice President of Public Affairs: Mariann White; Treasurer: Scott Merrick; Secretary: Jillian Andrews Dubois; National Committeeman: Doug Lindner; and National Committeewoman: Devan Quinn. Also Nolan Varee appointed as Finance Coordinator and Emily Cashman as Membership Coordinator.

“I am very honored to have been elected President of the NH Young Democrats and I am very excited to work with our newly elected executive board to make the Young Democrats a dynamic and active organization that makes a real difference in NH politics. We look forward to ensuring that the Young Democrats serve as a powerful voice for young people in New Hampshire, help young candidates get elected, and actively organize young people to support democrats up and down the ballot in 2014,” President Theo Groh stated after being elected.

The New Hampshire Young Democrats is a statewide organization with over 500 active members. The NHYD mission is to engage and involve young people in New Hampshire’s political community and to empower a new generation of New Hampshire leaders while advance progressive ideals and values.

From a long-former NHYD President of the last century — Good for the Young Democrats! And Theo, who I met at a debate in Manchester early last year that was put on for the “lesser-known” presidential candidates running in our First-In-The-Nation Presidential Primary will be a good leader. He’s brilliant.

“In my day,” as I remember older people say to me when I was a pup, we were quiet independent, especially since when I was in the Young Democrats our country was involved in a war and we physically saw body bags returning from Vietnam. We had a draft, we all fretted about our lottery numbers, and we had friends disappearing from college campus every now and then because they were drafted. So, perhaps the war was more personal to us than it is, at times, today. We saw it. Lived it. Felt it. We demonstrated. We cried.

The NHYDs in 1969-1971 when I was President took the very first position against the Vietnam War by a “democratic party” group. We were attacked by our own U.S. Senator, Tom McIntyre, who we respected but with whom we disagreed. We invited a man who was leader of the Vietnam Veterans Against The War to be our keynote speaker at our state convention in Bedford in 1971. During his speech, some of the state’s Democratic Party leaders who were in the audience walked out on John Kerry, who was making his first “political” visit to New Hampshire.

I say this not to encourage division, or to give a challenge to anyone. But rather to encourage our Young Democrats to be themselves. Feel free to take a position different from other party leaders. Young Democrats DO have views often different from those of us who are older but not-wiser. Afghanistan is still a war we’re too involved in, and if we got out sooner than later, we’d save money that would repay the recent round of budget cuts. Too many of our state democrats remain silent on President Obama’s efforts for reasonable gun controls — they need to be encouraged, backed up.

Transgender equality is another issue that just isn’t being dealt with by a Democratic House and a Democratic Governor. Nothing is more important on this Earth than the way we treat one another. And fairness in our tax structure should not be secondary to bowing to expanded gambling that has a price-tag, and little payback for our future. At the very least, questions need to be asked, explored. The NHYDs could hold a forum on the subject of tax structure and casino gambling, and other issues.

The NHYD’s should feel free to be themselves, beholding to no one. I think we do some great things as Democrats, but we can do even more. We need to be. Our future depends on that — and I’m not talking just about elections. (And the voters usually reward and appreciate those who lead and speak up, even if they disagree now and then.)

    Thanks, guys!

Mike, we’re looking forward to collaborating with BH in the year ahead!

Jim, thank you for all the kind words. I know you’ve long been a friend to NHYD. For those who don’t know, Jim was one of only five people elected Honorary Young Democrat at the last YDA National Convention–and deservedly so.
