Coke to ALEC: Drop Dead

Coca-Cola has withdrawn from ALEC, the right-wing corporate-funded organization whose model legislation has been used verbatim in many of the extreme bills promoted by the New Hampshire GOP.

The Coca-Cola Company has elected to discontinue its membership with the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC). Our involvement with ALEC was focused on efforts to oppose discriminatory food and beverage taxes, not on issues that have no direct bearing on our business. We have a long-standing policy of only taking positions on issues that impact our Company and industry.

The action follows a campaign by Color of Change to shine a light on ALEC-sponsored legislation and to hold corporations accountable for voter suppression efforts and “stand your ground” gun laws.

seems to work.  See Komen, Limbaugh and now ALEC.  The power of social networking is that it organizes campaigns fast and the numbers are overwhelming.  If we are looking for power, here’s a place to look.

I heard this story on NPR this morning. BTW, I’ve been meaning to thank Speaker O’Brien for attempting to “demonize” public radio. I hadn’t been a regular NPR listener until he threw that particular hissy fit. Now I listen to NPR every day. What an excellent news source.

I understand they are standing by their support of ALEC?  Any thoughts of a boycott in NH?

There are over 2000 companies that belong to ALEC.  Check the website Alec Exposed to see the list.  Funny how the bright light of publicity will send folks scurrying for cover.  First Coke then maybe Kraft, then..who knows?  I first wrote about ALEC last fall.  Latest thing I have found is that ALEC is getting western states to threaten to sue the federal government if it does not turn over federal lands within the boarders of some western states such as Utah.  ALEC is behind our voter ID bill and an affiliate is behind Right To Work that rises like a zombie from the dust of legislatures long gone.  NRA is responsible for the Castle Doctrine which is basically shoot first and ask questions later if you feel the teeniest tiniest bit threatened.  What you get is dead teenagers, and the young man in Florida was not the first.  We are already hearing noises here about repealing that monster legislation which passed last year, as well we should.

I predict that there will be more and more who will decide that the heat in the kitchen is more than they want to endure and will get out.  As for me “I’ve got a little list, I’ve got a little list  I’ll put him on the list, he never will be missed.”  (with apology to Gilbert and Sullivan’s MIKADO)

at what is happening with Limbaugh and Komen, etc., and seeing the writing on the wall.  The power of the people can be focused and brought to bear very quickly these days.
